How to Change a Public Network to Private in Windows 10
In Windows 10, a network can be set as either public or private. These security settings impact your device’s visibility and accessibility on the network, as well as the ability to share files and printers. Sometimes, you may need to change the network type to private to enable better device interaction within the same network. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to switch a public network to private in Windows 10.
Step 1: Open Network Settings
First, open Settings in Windows. You can do this by clicking the Start menu or by pressing Win + I. Then, select the Network & Internet section.
Step 2: Select Your Connection Type
In the "Network & Internet" section, choose the tab that matches your connection type. This will be Ethernet for wired connections or Wi-Fi for wireless connections. Click on the name of your network.
Step 3: Change Network Settings
A window with your network settings will open. Find the Network profile option, where you will see two choices:
- Public — makes your computer hidden from other devices on the network.
- Private — makes your computer visible to other devices and enables sharing options.
Select Private to change the network type. This will make your device visible to others on the same network, allowing for file and printer sharing.
Step 4: Close Settings
Once you select the desired network profile, the changes will take effect immediately. You can now close the settings.
Additional Tips
If you don’t see the option to change the network type or if it’s unavailable, you may need administrative access on the device. Also, ensure your device is connected to a secure network where private mode is appropriate, like at home or in a trusted office environment.
Switching your network type to private can improve sharing capabilities and device connectivity, but remember, this setting is recommended only in trusted and secure networks.
