How to Change Default Programs in Windows

Windows allows users to customize which applications are used to open different file types and perform specific tasks, such as setting a default web browser or photo viewer. Changing default programs makes your system usage more convenient, granting quick access to your preferred applications. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Open Windows Settings

The first step is to open the Settings menu. Press Windows + I on your keyboard or go to Start and select Settings. This opens a window where you can adjust various system configurations.

2. Go to the “Default Apps” Section

In the Settings window, select Apps, then choose Default Apps. Here, you’ll see a list of app categories (such as email, web browsers, music, and video players) that you can set as defaults.

3. Choose a Default Program for Each Category

To change the default program for a specific category (e.g., web browser), click on the currently listed program. A list of available applications will appear. Click on the desired app to set it as the default for that category.

4. Customize Default Programs for Specific File Types

If you want to change the application used for a particular file type (such as .jpg or .pdf), scroll down the page and select Choose default apps by file type. Find the file format you want to change and select which program should open it by default.

5. Alternative Method: Use the Right-Click Menu

You can also set a default program for a specific file type directly through Windows Explorer. Right-click on the file, choose Open with, then select Choose another app. Check the box next to “Always use this app to open .[file extension] files” and click OK.
