How to Change DNS Server in Windows
Changing your DNS server in Windows can improve website loading speeds, enhance connection security, or help bypass provider restrictions. This guide will walk you through the steps to quickly adjust your DNS settings in Windows.
Step 1: Open the Control Panel
First, open the Control Panel in Windows. Press Win + R to bring up the Run dialog, type control
, and press Enter. Then, navigate to Network and Internet.
Step 2: Access Network Connection Settings
In the Network and Internet section, select Network and Sharing Center. On the left side, click on Change adapter settings.
Step 3: Choose Your Network Adapter
You’ll see a list of available network connections. Find the adapter your computer uses to connect to the internet (usually named “Ethernet” for wired connections or “Wi-Fi” for wireless). Right-click on it and select Properties.
Step 4: Configure DNS in Connection Properties
In the Properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties. In the new window, locate the section labeled Use the following DNS server addresses.
Step 5: Enter New DNS Server Addresses
Enter the addresses for your preferred and alternate DNS servers. Popular options include:
- Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
- Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
- Yandex DNS: 77.88.8.8 and 77.88.8.1
After entering the addresses, click OK to save the changes, and close all settings windows.
Step 6: Restart Your Connection
To apply the changes, it’s recommended to restart your network connection or computer. Once restarted, your computer will begin using the new DNS server.
