How to Change Network Name in Windows

Changing your network name in Windows can be helpful for organizing and quickly identifying different networks, whether at home or work. Here’s a straightforward guide on how to change it using Windows' built-in tools.

Step 1: Open the "Local Group Policy Editor"

This method works for Windows versions that support the Local Group Policy Editor (such as Windows Pro and Enterprise). To get started:

  • Press Win + R to open the "Run" dialog box.
  • Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to Network Settings

In the "Local Group Policy Editor," follow these steps:

  • Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Network Connections.

Step 3: Locate and Change the Network Name

In the Network Connections section, find the Network Profile Name setting. Double-click it and specify the new name for your network in the pop-up window.

Alternative Method: Changing Network Name via Registry Editor

If you don’t have access to the Local Group Policy Editor, you can use the Registry Editor instead:

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles.
  • In the "Profiles" folder, find the desired network by using the "ProfileName" parameter.
  • Double-click the profile name and change it to the desired name.
