How to Change Network Type in Windows

The network type in Windows is crucial for setting up security and data sharing between devices. There are two main network types: Private and Public. Private networks are for home or work settings, where devices trust each other, while Public networks are for places where device access should be limited. In this guide, we’ll walk through how to change the network type in Windows.

Step 1: Open Network Settings

To change the network type, start by accessing the network settings:

  • Press Win + I to open the Windows Settings window.
  • Go to the Network & Internet section.

Step 2: Select the Active Connection

In the Network & Internet section, go to the Status tab on the left side of the screen:

  • Here, you will see the active network connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  • Click on the name of the current connection to open its properties.

Step 3: Change the Network Type

Once you’re in your connection’s properties, select the appropriate network type:

  • Private network — choose this option if you’re on a trusted network, such as at home. In this mode, your PC is visible to other devices in the network, making it easier to share files and printers.
  • Public network — choose this setting if you’re connected to a public network, like Wi-Fi in a café or airport. This option limits network access to your PC, providing added security.

Step 4: Verify the Changes

After changing the network type, Windows will automatically adjust security settings based on your selection. To ensure the changes are applied, go back to the Network Status section and check that the network type is now updated.
