How to Change the Downloads Folder in Windows 10 and Windows 11

In Windows 10 and Windows 11, downloaded files are saved by default to the “Downloads” folder. However, you may want to change this location — perhaps to free up space or organize your files more effectively. In this guide, we’ll walk through the steps to change the default download folder in both versions of Windows.

Step 1: Open Windows File Explorer

First, open File Explorer by pressing Win + E or by finding it in the Start menu.

Step 2: Locate the Downloads Folder

In the left pane of File Explorer, find and click on the Downloads folder. It is usually located under Quick Access or within your user profile folder in the “This PC” section.

Step 3: Open Downloads Folder Properties

Right-click on the Downloads folder and select Properties. This will open a new window with the folder’s options.

Step 4: Go to the “Location” Tab

In the Properties window, click on the Location tab. Here, you’ll see the current location path for the Downloads folder.

Step 5: Change the Download Folder Path

Click on the Move button and select the new folder where you want your downloads to be saved. You can create a new folder on any drive or choose an existing one.

Step 6: Confirm the Changes

After selecting the new location, click Apply and then OK. You’ll be prompted to move existing files from the old Downloads folder to the new one. Choose your preferred option and confirm.
