How to Change Windows Login, Logout, and Shutdown Sounds

Changing system sounds in Windows is an easy way to personalize your computer and give it a unique touch. The most common sounds users want to modify are the login, logout, and shutdown sounds. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change them.

Step 1: Open Sound Settings

To get started, open the sound settings, where you can adjust all system sound settings:

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type mmsys.cpl and press Enter.

Step 2: Go to the “Sounds” Tab

Once the Sound window opens, select the Sounds tab. Here, you’ll see a list of all available Windows events, each of which can be customized individually.

Step 3: Find the Desired Events

In the list of sound events, locate the ones you want to change:

  • Windows Logon – the sound played when logging into the system.
  • Windows Logoff – the sound played when logging out of the system.
  • Windows Shutdown – the sound that plays when shutting down the computer.

Step 4: Change the Sound

To change a sound:

  1. Select the desired event from the list.
  2. Click the Browse... button to locate the sound file you want to use on your computer. Make sure the file is in .wav format, as Windows does not support other formats for system sounds.
  3. After selecting the file, click OK to save the changes.

Step 5: Apply and Test Your Changes

After setting up the sounds you want, click Apply and then OK. Now, each time you log in, log out, or shut down your computer, your custom sounds will play.
