How to Delete the Windows.old Folder in Windows 11

When you upgrade to a new version of Windows, the system automatically creates a Windows.old folder containing files from the previous OS. This folder allows you to roll back to the previous version if needed. However, if you're certain you won’t be returning to the old version, deleting this folder can free up significant disk space. Here’s a simple and safe method to remove the Windows.old folder in Windows 11.

Step 1: Open Disk Cleanup

1. Press Win + S and type “Disk Cleanup” in the search bar.
2. Select the Disk Cleanup utility from the results.

Step 2: Choose the Drive to Clean

When prompted, select the C: drive or whichever drive has Windows installed. Click “OK” to proceed.

Step 3: Run System File Cleanup

After Disk Cleanup opens, click “Clean up system files”. The utility will again prompt you to select a drive; choose the same drive as before.

Step 4: Locate and Select Windows.old for Deletion

After a second scan, you’ll see a list of files. Look for “Previous Windows installations” or “Old Windows version”. Check the box next to this option.

Step 5: Confirm Deletion

Click “OK”, then “Delete Files” to complete the process. Windows will delete the Windows.old folder and free up disk space.

Helpful Tips

Before deleting the Windows.old folder, ensure the new version of Windows is running stably and you won’t need to revert to the previous version. You can also use Storage Settings to identify other temporary files that can be safely removed.

Removing the Windows.old folder is safe if you're certain you won’t need the previous version. Enjoy the extra space on your disk!
