How to Disable the Touch Screen on a Windows Laptop

The touch screen feature is useful on Windows devices, but in some cases, it can be unnecessary or even disruptive. For example, when using a laptop with a keyboard and mouse or while working with graphic software, accidental touches might interfere with your work. If you want to disable the touch screen on your laptop, follow this simple guide.

Step-by-Step Guide to Disable the Touch Screen

Step 1: Open the Device Manager

First, open Device Manager. You can do this in several ways:

  • Press Win + X and select "Device Manager" from the menu.
  • Alternatively, go to the Control Panel, select “Hardware and Sound,” then “Device Manager.”

Step 2: Find the Touch Screen Device

In Device Manager, locate the section "Human Interface Devices (HID)". This is where the touch screen driver is located.

Step 3: Disable the Touch Screen

In the "Human Interface Devices" section, look for the "HID-compliant touch screen" device (the name may vary slightly depending on your Windows version). Right-click on it and select "Disable device".

Note: Windows may ask you to confirm. Click “Yes” to proceed.

Step 4: Verify the Touch Screen is Disabled

After disabling the touch screen, test it by touching the screen to ensure it no longer responds to touches. The screen should no longer react to touch inputs, but all other laptop functions will remain the same.

How to Enable the Touch Screen Again

To re-enable the touch screen, go back to Device Manager, find “HID-compliant touch screen,” and select "Enable device". The touch screen functionality will be restored immediately.

Helpful Tips

  • If you are new to Device Manager, be careful not to disable other devices by mistake.
  • Disabling the touch screen doesn’t delete the driver, so you can easily enable it again anytime.
