How to Disable the Windows 10 Firewall

The Windows 10 Firewall is a built-in security feature designed to protect your computer from external threats. However, there may be instances where you need to temporarily disable it, such as for network troubleshooting or running certain applications. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to disable the Windows 10 Firewall properly.

Important: Why You Should Be Cautious About Disabling the Firewall

Disabling your firewall can leave your computer vulnerable to attacks. It is recommended to disable it only when absolutely necessary and to re-enable it once you are done. Re-enabling it afterward will help keep your system secure.

Step 1: Open Firewall Settings

  1. Click on Start and select Settings (gear icon).
  2. In the Settings window, select Update & Security.
  3. In the left-hand panel, choose Windows Security.

Step 2: Go to the "Firewall & Network Protection" Section

  1. Find and click on Firewall & Network Protection under the Windows Security section.
  2. You will see three network types: Private network, Domain network, and Public network.

Step 3: Disable the Firewall for the Selected Network Type

  1. Click on the network type where you wish to disable the firewall.
  2. Toggle the switch next to Windows Defender Firewall to the Off position.

Step 4: Confirm the Firewall is Disabled

Once you have toggled the switch, the firewall will be disabled for the selected network type. To fully disable protection, repeat these steps for each network type (Private, Domain, Public).

How to Re-enable the Firewall

To re-enable the firewall, simply follow the same steps, but in the final step, toggle the firewall back to the On position for each network type.
