How to Limit CPU Frequency in Power Settings on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Limiting your CPU frequency can help extend your device's lifespan and reduce power consumption, which is especially useful when running on battery. Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 allow you to control CPU power through power settings. Let’s go through the steps on how to do this.

1. Open Power Settings

First, open the Control Panel by following these steps:

  • Press Win + S and type Control Panel in the search bar.
  • Open the Control Panel and select Power Options.

2. Choose Your Power Plan

Now, select the power plan you are currently using (for example, “Balanced” or “High Performance”) and click on Change plan settings.

3. Open Advanced Power Settings

On the next screen, click Change advanced power settings. This will open a window where you can adjust settings for the CPU and other components.

4. Find Processor Power Management Settings

In the list of settings, find the Processor power management section and expand it. Here, you will see a few key options:

  • Minimum processor state: allows you to set the minimum power level at which the processor will operate.
  • Maximum processor state: limits the maximum frequency of the CPU as a percentage of its full capacity.

5. Set the Maximum Processor State

To limit CPU frequency, adjust the Maximum processor state setting. For example, set it to 80% to cap the CPU performance at 80% of its full power.

6. Save Changes

Once you have set the desired values, click OK to save the changes, then close all settings windows. The CPU frequency limit will take effect immediately after applying the settings.
