How to Remove Windows from Mac

Many Mac users install Windows to run compatible applications or test various programs. However, there may come a time when you want to remove Windows, either to free up disk space or restore your Mac to its original state. This guide walks you through the steps to correctly remove Windows from your Mac using built-in macOS tools.

Method 1: Using Boot Camp Assistant

If you installed Windows through Boot Camp, the removal process is straightforward. Boot Camp Assistant is a macOS application designed to install and remove Windows on a Mac. Follow these steps:

  1. Open Boot Camp Assistant. You can find it in the “Applications” > “Utilities” folder.
  2. Launch the app and click on “Continue”.
  3. When the options screen appears, select “Remove Windows 10 or later”.
  4. Confirm the removal and wait for the process to complete. Boot Camp Assistant will automatically delete the Windows partition and reclaim the disk space for macOS.

Method 2: Manually Removing Windows

If Boot Camp doesn’t show the option to delete the Windows partition, you can perform this task manually using Disk Utility:

  1. Open Disk Utility by navigating to “Applications” > “Utilities”.
  2. Select the BOOTCAMP partition (or its custom name if it’s been renamed).
  3. Right-click on the partition and choose “Delete Partition”.
  4. Confirm the deletion and combine the free space with the primary macOS partition.

Important Points Before Removing Windows

Before you delete Windows, make sure to:

  • Back up any essential data, as removing Windows will erase all files and applications on that partition.
  • Ensure your macOS is up-to-date for optimal compatibility with Boot Camp and Disk Utility.
