How to Rename a Drive or USB Stick in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Organizing files and folders can be easier when you rename your drives or USB sticks. Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 make this task simple with a few straightforward steps. Here, we’ll explore several methods to help you quickly rename your drive or USB stick.

Method 1: Renaming a Drive or USB via File Explorer

The fastest and easiest way to rename a drive or USB stick is by using the Windows File Explorer:

  1. Open File Explorer (press Win + E or click the File Explorer icon on the taskbar).
  2. In the This PC section, locate the drive or USB stick you want to rename.
  3. Right-click on the drive’s icon and select Rename.
  4. Type the new name and press Enter to confirm.

The drive name will be updated immediately, and you’ll see the new label in File Explorer and other Windows applications.

Method 2: Renaming a Drive via Properties

If you prefer more customization options, you can rename the drive through its properties:

  1. Open File Explorer and find the drive or USB stick you wish to rename.
  2. Right-click on the drive’s icon and select Properties.
  3. In the properties window, go to the General tab.
  4. At the top, where the current drive name is displayed, enter the new name.
  5. Click OK or Apply to save the changes.

The new name will now appear throughout the system.

Method 3: Renaming a Drive via Command Prompt

For more advanced users, you can also rename a drive using the Command Prompt. This method is useful if you don’t have access to File Explorer:

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator (press Win + X and choose Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)).
  2. Type the command label [drive_letter]: new_name, replacing [drive_letter] with the letter of the drive you want to rename and new_name with the desired name.
  3. Press Enter, and the drive name will be updated.

For example, to rename drive D to “Work Data,” the command would be: label D: Work Data.
