How to Reset Windows 11 to Factory Settings

Sometimes, it’s necessary to restore a Windows 11 computer to its factory settings, whether it’s to resolve performance issues, remove malware, or prepare the device for resale. Resetting the system can make this process straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reset Windows 11.

Step 1: Open System Settings

The first step is to open the Windows 11 settings. You can do this in one of the following ways:

  • Press Win + I on your keyboard for quick access to the Settings window.
  • Or, click Start and select Settings from the menu.

Step 2: Go to the "Recovery" Section

In the Settings window, select System from the left menu, then scroll down and find the Recovery option. Click on it to enter the recovery settings.

Step 3: Click "Reset this PC"

In the Recovery section, click the Reset this PC button. A new window will appear with two main options:

  • Keep my files — removes apps and settings but keeps your personal files.
  • Remove everything — completely wipes the device, including files, apps, and settings. This is recommended when selling or transferring the device.

Step 4: Choose Your Reinstallation Method

Next, you’ll be prompted to choose how to reinstall Windows:

  • Cloud download — downloads Windows 11 files from the internet and reinstalls them. This option requires an internet connection and usually takes longer but is helpful if system files are corrupted.
  • Local reinstall — uses files already on your device to restore the system. It’s faster and doesn’t require an internet connection.

Step 5: Confirm and Start the Reset Process

After selecting your options, click Next and follow the on-screen instructions. The system will show a summary of the changes and ask you to confirm the reset. Click Reset to initiate the process.

Completing the Reset Process

Your computer will restart several times during the reset. Once the process is complete, Windows 11 will load in its initial state, as if it were brand new. You can then set up the system or prepare it for another user.
