How to Set Laptop Lid Closing Actions in Windows 10

When you close your laptop lid, Windows 10 typically puts it to sleep or into hibernation by default. However, you may prefer to change this behavior so that your laptop continues running, shuts down, or does something else. This guide will help you adjust the settings for laptop lid closing actions.

Step 1: Open the Control Panel

First, open the Control Panel. Press Win + S to bring up the search bar, type “Control Panel,” and select it from the results.

Step 2: Go to the Power Options

In the Control Panel, locate the Power Options section and click on it. If you are in category view, first choose Hardware and Sound and then Power Options.

Step 3: Adjust the Lid Closing Settings

On the left side of the Power Options window, select Choose what closing the lid does. A new menu will appear with options for setting actions for different scenarios—whether the laptop is on battery power or plugged in.

Step 4: Select the Desired Action

In the dropdown menus under When I close the lid, specify what you want to happen when the laptop lid is closed:

  • Do nothing — the laptop will continue to run as normal.
  • Sleep — the device will enter sleep mode, saving open programs and documents.
  • Hibernate — the laptop will save data to disk and completely shut off power.
  • Shut down — the computer will power off entirely.

Step 5: Save Your Changes

After choosing the action you prefer, click Save changes. The settings will take effect immediately, and the selected action will occur the next time you close the laptop lid.

Additional Tips

If you want to temporarily prevent automatic sleep or hibernation, you can use the Project display mode (press Win + P) and select “PC screen only.” This will allow you to turn off the display while keeping the system active.

Adjusting the laptop lid closing action is a convenient way to optimize your laptop’s behavior for different situations, whether you’re working with an external monitor or aiming to save battery life.
