How to Set Up Security Questions for Password Recovery in Windows 10 and Windows 11

If you've forgotten the password to your account in Windows 10 or Windows 11, one of the easiest ways to regain access is by using security questions. These questions help confirm your identity and reset the password without the need for third-party tools. Let's walk through how to set up security questions for password recovery in both versions of the operating system.

Step 1: Link Your Microsoft Account

First, it’s important that your Windows account is linked to a Microsoft account. If you're using a local account, security questions won't be available. Therefore, to enable password recovery through questions, switch to a Microsoft account. Here's how:

  • Open Settings through the Start menu or by pressing Win + I.
  • Go to Accounts and select Your Info.
  • Click on Sign in with a Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once you’ve switched, your account will be tied to Microsoft, allowing you to set up security questions for password recovery.

Step 2: Set Up Security Questions for Password Recovery

Now that you’re using a Microsoft account, you can set up security questions for password recovery:

  • Open Settings and go to Accounts.
  • Select Sign-in options from the left menu.
  • Scroll down to the Password Recovery section and click on Add security questions.
  • You’ll be asked to choose several security questions and provide answers. Try to select questions that are easy for you to answer, but hard for others to guess.

Once you've chosen and answered the questions, click Done to save your changes.

Step 3: Using Security Questions to Recover Your Password

Now, if you forget your password, you won’t need to resort to other methods to reset it. Simply click on the "Forgot password?" option on the sign-in screen and follow the prompts. After attempting to enter your password, you'll be asked to answer the security questions to confirm your identity and reset your password.

Keep in mind that to use these questions, you need an internet connection and an active Microsoft account. If you're using a local account, you won’t be able to use security questions for password recovery in Windows 10 or 11.
