Mouse Lagging in Windows: How to Fix It?
Experiencing a lagging or stuttering mouse in Windows? This issue can be caused by various factors, from hardware glitches to software conflicts. Let’s go over the most effective ways to resolve this annoying problem.
1. Check the Mouse Connection and Functionality
First, make sure your mouse is properly connected. For wired mice, inspect the cable and USB port. If you’re using a wireless mouse, check that the batteries are charged or that the battery level is sufficient. Try connecting your mouse to a different USB port to rule out a port issue.
2. Update Mouse Drivers
Outdated or improperly installed drivers can cause interruptions and lag in mouse performance. To update your drivers:
- Open Device Manager (right-click on the Start button > Device Manager).
- Locate Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click on your device and select Update driver.
- Choose the option to automatically search for updated drivers.
3. Disable Pointer Precision
Windows includes a "Pointer Precision" setting that can sometimes cause unexpected mouse behavior. To disable it:
- Go to Control Panel > Mouse.
- Open the Pointer Options tab.
- Uncheck the box for Enhance pointer precision.
- Click Apply and then OK.
4. Check Power Settings
In some cases, Windows may put USB ports into power-saving mode, which can affect your mouse. To disable this feature:
- Open Device Manager and go to the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
- Right-click on each USB controller and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
5. Disable Unnecessary Programs and Services
Some programs may interfere with your mouse, causing lag. Check your startup settings and close unnecessary programs:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Disable unnecessary programs that start with your system.
6. Scan for Viruses and Malware
Malware can put strain on your system and cause peripheral devices to lag. Run a full system scan using antivirus software to ensure there are no threats.
