Setting Up a Local Area Network (LAN) Between Windows 10 Computers
Creating a LAN between multiple computers running Windows 10 can greatly simplify data sharing, as well as the use of shared printers and other devices. This guide walks you through the process of setting up a Local Area Network (LAN) between Windows 10 computers.
Step 1: Connect Computers to the Same Network
First, ensure that all the computers you want to connect are on the same network, either by connecting to the same router or switch. You can do this via Ethernet or Wi-Fi:
- Connect the computers to the router using network cables.
- If using Wi-Fi, make sure all devices are connected to the same wireless network.
Step 2: Enable Network Discovery
To allow the computers to detect each other, enable network discovery:
- Open Windows Settings and go to Network & Internet.
- Select Status, then click on Network and Sharing Center.
- From the left menu, choose Change advanced sharing settings.
- Enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing for private networks.
Step 3: Set Up File and Folder Sharing
Now, you can set up sharing for specific files or folders:
- Find the folder you wish to share, right-click on it, and select Properties.
- Go to the Sharing tab and click Advanced Sharing.
- Check the box for Share this folder and click Apply.
- You can also configure access permissions by choosing the level of access for other network users.
Step 4: Verify Network Connection and Access Shared Folders
To ensure that the network is working properly:
- Open File Explorer and select Network from the left menu.
- You should see other computers connected to the network.
- Click on any of them to access shared files and folders.
Step 5: Troubleshooting Potential Issues
If you don’t see other computers on the network, try these steps:
- Ensure all devices are on the same network and in the same workgroup.
- Check your Windows firewall settings to make sure it isn’t blocking network discovery and sharing.
- Restart both computers and the router if necessary.
