Sound Not Working in Windows 10 and Windows 11: How to Restore Audio

Sound issues on computers running Windows 10 or Windows 11 are fairly common and can result from a range of issues, from configuration errors to driver or hardware malfunctions. Below, we outline the main ways to restore audio on your Windows system.

Step 1: Check the Connection and Condition of Your Audio Device

First, ensure that your playback device (speakers or headphones) is connected correctly. Inspect the cable for any damage and verify that the device is plugged into the correct port.

Additionally, check any volume controls on the speakers or headphones themselves. Sometimes, the issue can simply be due to physical volume settings on the device.

Step 2: Check Volume Settings in Windows

  • Right-click the sound icon on the taskbar and select “Open Sound settings.”
  • Make sure the volume is not muted or set to a minimum.
  • Open “Volume mixer” and ensure the volume for each application is set correctly.

Step 3: Check the Default Playback Device

Sometimes, Windows may select the wrong playback device by default. To confirm and select the correct one:

  1. Go to Settings -> System -> Sound.
  2. Find the Output section and select your audio device from the list.

Step 4: Update or Reinstall Sound Drivers

Driver issues are often a common cause of audio problems. To update or reinstall your audio drivers:

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Locate the Sound, video, and game controllers section.
  3. Right-click your audio device and choose Update driver or Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your computer so Windows can automatically reinstall a fresh driver.

Step 5: Use the Audio Troubleshooter

Windows includes a built-in troubleshooting tool that can help diagnose and resolve sound issues:

  • Go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Troubleshoot.
  • Select Playing Audio and click Run the troubleshooter.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to identify and resolve the problem.

Step 6: Check the Windows Audio Service

The Windows Audio service controls the audio functions on your system. If it’s disabled, sound won’t work. To check and restart it:

  1. Press Win + R and type services.msc.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Ensure that the startup type is set to Automatic.
