This Sign-In Method is Restricted in Windows 10 and Windows 11: What to Do?
When trying to sign into a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, you might encounter an error message that says "This sign-in method is restricted." This issue can arise for several reasons, such as security settings, account configurations, or system updates. Here's what you can do to resolve the problem.
1. Check Security Policy Settings
Windows has a security policy system that may block certain sign-in methods. To ensure this issue isn't related to security policies, follow these steps:
- Press Win + R to open the "Run" dialog box.
- Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Navigate to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Logon.
- Look for settings related to sign-in methods, such as "Do not allow the use of local accounts for sign-in" or "Do not allow the use of PINs." Ensure these are configured correctly.
If you find that one of these policies is blocking a sign-in method, change the setting to allow the desired sign-in method.
2. Use a Microsoft Account
Sometimes the issue is related to the account configuration. If you're trying to sign in using a local account, consider switching to a Microsoft account. Here's how:
- Open the Start menu and go to Settings → Accounts → Your Info.
- If you're using a local account, select the option "Sign in with a Microsoft account."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
After switching to a Microsoft account, try signing in again using your new credentials.
3. Check for Windows Updates
Sign-in errors might be caused by an outdated version of Windows or system update issues. To check for updates, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Click "Check for updates" and install any available updates.
After updating, restart your PC and try signing in again.
4. System Restore
If the previous methods didn't work, you may need to perform a system restore to a previous state when the error wasn't present. To do this:
- Press Win + X and select "System."
- Navigate to System Protection and click "System Restore."
- Select a restore point that was created before the error occurred and follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Create a New Account
If the issue persists, it could be related to your user account. Try creating a new account:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Family & Other Users.
- Click "Add someone else to this PC" and follow the instructions.
- Once the new account is created, sign in with it and check if the issue persists.
