Windows 10 Kiosk Mode

Windows 10 Kiosk Mode is a feature that allows you to run a device in a restricted mode, where users can access only a single designated application. This mode is ideal for use cases like information kiosks, self-service terminals, or presentation devices where access to other system functions and programs should be limited.

What is Kiosk Mode?

Kiosk Mode, also known as Assigned Access, in Windows 10 allows you to specify a single application that users can access, while blocking access to other operating system functions. When launched, the device will automatically load the selected application, without giving users access to the desktop, Start menu, or other applications. This is especially useful for public-use devices.

Benefits of Using Kiosk Mode

  • Enhanced Security: Users cannot access system settings or other applications, which helps prevent unauthorized access to data and configurations.
  • Simplified Use: Designed for a single, specific task, making navigation easy for users.
  • Control: Restricted access minimizes the risk of accidental changes or deletion of important files and settings.

How to Set Up Kiosk Mode in Windows 10

  1. Create a New Account: To set up Kiosk Mode, first create a separate account for the kiosk through Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
  2. Launch Kiosk Mode: Go to Settings > Accounts > Set up assigned access and select the “Set up a kiosk” option.
  3. Choose an Application: After creating the account, select the application that will be accessible in Kiosk Mode. Windows 10 supports both classic applications and those from the Microsoft Store.
  4. Complete the Setup: After selecting the application, the system will prompt you to restart the device. Upon rebooting in Kiosk Mode, the designated application will automatically open.

How to Exit Kiosk Mode

To exit Kiosk Mode, you will need to restart the device and log in with a different account that has administrative rights. Kiosk Mode does not offer a standard exit button, which provides additional security.

Potential Limitations and Drawbacks

While Kiosk Mode is excellent for restricted use, it does have a few limitations. For instance, you can only run one application and cannot use multitasking. Additionally, Kiosk Mode does not support all types of applications, particularly those requiring extensive system interaction.
